One of two homeless men charged in the beating and stomping death of a transient outside a fast-food restaurant in downtown Los Angeles pleaded no contest today to voluntary manslaughter.
Derek Miller, 31, is expected to be sentenced Oct. 18 to 11 years in state prison in connection with the Feb. 7, 2015, killing of Derrick Hamilton, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Hamilton was attacked in the parking lot of the restaurant in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue, authorities said. He died after being taken to a hospital.
Co-defendant Charles Allender, 42, was charged along with Miller and is awaiting trial on murder and assault charges.
He is due back in court Monday and could face up to 32 years to life in prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
