Three New Directions for Veterans (NDVets) housing developments will receive more than $8.7 million in grants through the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention (VHHP) program, funded through Proposition 41. These three projects are among only 17 selected throughout California for a total of $62 million awarded in 2015, the first year of VHHP funding.
“We’re honored to be awarded support for projects that will provide much-needed affordable housing for over 100 homeless veterans and their families,” said NDVets’ President & CEO Gregory C. Scott. “The selections speak to the excellence of our services and staff and the strength of our partners: East LA Community Corporation, Hollywood Community Housing Corporation, Housing Works California and Palm Communities.”
Located in East Los Angeles, the West Adams area of Los Angeles, and the City of El Monte, the housing communities will help provide the housing needed for the county to end homelessness among veterans and their families. The three developments will be ready for occupancy in 2017 and 2018.
In June 2014, California voters approved Proposition 41, which redirected $600 million in voter-approved veterans bonds to fund affordable multifamily supportive housing for low-income and homeless veterans. The second round of VHHP awards is expected to be awarded early next year.
With 353 permanent supportive housing units for homeless and disabled veterans now in operation or currently leasing across multiple facilities, NDVets is a pioneer in the creation of permanent housing for veterans. The agency also has 161 transitional housing beds, of which 150 are located on the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System campus, where NDVets offers job training, mental health services and an array of other programs for homeless and at-risk veterans.
