“American Sniper” neared the quarter-billion- dollar mark in domestic box office sales today, and remained in the number one spot with an estimated $31.9 million in sales this weekend.

It was a good weekend for Hollywood, with overall ticket sales this Super Bowl weekend up about 23 percent over last year, said industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian at Rentrak.

Cornering the other end of the demographic spectrum was the kid-friendly “Paddington,” in second place with a projected $8.5 million in weekend sales.

Two movies opened in the third and fourth positions: “Project Almanac” with $8.5 million and “Black Or White” at $6.5 million.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios and tracked by Rentrak, were “The Boy Next Door” ($6 million), “The Wedding Ringer” ($5.8 million), “The Imitation Game” ($5.2 million), “Taken 3” ($3.7 million), “Strange Magic” (3.4 million) and “The Loft” (premiering at $2.9 million).
