“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” celebrated the New Year atop the North American box office, collecting another $21.7 million, according to final figures released today.
The film, wrapping up director Peter Jackson’s series of Middle Earth adventures, has earned more than $220.6 million in its three weeks of release, according to box office tracker Rentrak.
The fantasy film “Into the Woods” took second place, earning $18.7 million between Friday and Sunday. The Angelina Jolie-directed “Unbroken” was third with $18.2 million.
“The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death” opened in fourth place with $15 million, followed by Ben Stiller’s “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” with $14.5 million.
Rounding out the top 10 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters were “Annie” ($11.2 million); “The Imitation Game” ($7.8 million); “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” ($7.6 million); “The Gambler” ($6.3 million); and “Big Hero 6” ($4.7 million).
