“No Good Deed” opened in the number one spot at the North American box offices this weekend, with an estimated $24.5 million in sales.
The Sony release is the first fall hit this year, according to Rentrak industry analysts. The firm’s Mike Marcell said the movie benefits from “terrific stars, a great marketing campaign and a strong social media buzz.”
“Dolphin Tale 2” drew in a large family crowd, and opened in second place with an estimated $16.6 million in weekend sales for Warner Bros. In third place, “Guardians Of The Galaxy had an $8 million weekend domestically.
That contributed to Disney’s $305.9 million North American total over seven weeks.
Worldwide, “Guardians” has an estimated worldwide gross of $612 million, a figure Marcell called “whopping.”
Rounding out the top 10 movies at the U.S. and Canadian box offices this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were “Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles” ($4.8 million), “Let’s Be Cops” ($4.3 million), “The Drop” (premiering with $4.2 million), “If I Stay” ($4 million), “The November Man” ($2.8 million), “The Giver” ($2.6 million) and “The Hundred-Foot Journey” ($2.5 million).
