Starting today (May 23), law enforcement personnel will be out in force during the Memorial Day weekend and maintain a sharp lookout for motorists driving while impaired or violating other traffic laws.

The California Highway Patrol will conduct a maximum enforcement period from 6 p.m. today through 11:59 p.m. Monday (May 26), said CHP Officer Francisco
Villalobos. All available officers will be deployed during the effort.

Additionally, numerous law enforcement agencies participating in the “Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force” will set up DUI/driver’s license checkpoints throughout the county and conduct DUI saturation patrols, organizers said.

Officials noted that along with the warm weather forecast, which will draw people to beaches, the holiday weekend will also likely feature college
and high school students celebrating graduation.

Stepped-up law enforcement activities will begin today and continue through Monday. Police officials urge motorists to avoid drinking and driving
and to refuse to enter a vehicle driven by someone who has been drinking.

The Los Angeles Police Dept.’s (LAPD) enforcement effort will include the following:

– from 4 p.m. through midnight, a saturation patrol of extra officers in the Central Bureau;
– from 7 p.m. through 1 a.m. Saturday, a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at Florence Avenue and Main Street in South Los Angeles;
– from 8 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday, a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at Highland and De Longpre avenues in Hollywood;
– from 8 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday, a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at Osborne Street and Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Pacoima; and
– from 8 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday, a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at Ventura Boulevard and Big Oak Drive in Studio City.

Checkpoints also will be conducted tonight in Pasadena and Santa Clarita.
