A New Style Takes Root in Brentwood – Patina Style

Drive through the streets of Brentwood and you will undoubtedly see the artistry of local architect Steve Giannetti and designer Brooke Giannetti. The husband and wife team behind Giannetti Home, a full-service architecture, interior, and landscape design firm, Steve has designed over 75 homes in the area, with Brooke doing many of the interiors.
Brooke, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, has always loved Brentwood, and when Steve came to the area 26-years ago, he fell in love — both with LA and with Brooke. They’ve been collaborating ever since and in 2008, they opened a home furnishings store as part of their design and architecture business, located at 11980 San Vicente. It has the feel of an old industrial loft building—which they created practically from scratch to match the array of antiques and found objects housed inside. They love that Photo by Steven Khansomeone can walk in off the street and strike up a conversation about a bench or one of Steve’s water-inspired paintings. The store gives them even more of an opportunity to connect with the neighborhood.
But the store isn’t the only way they connect. Brooke is the voice behind the popular blog Velvet & Linen, one of the Washington Post’s top ten design blogs, and this fall, she and Steve are launching their first book, PATINA STYLE. A gorgeous full-color tome that takes readers step-by-step through their design process and shows how to seamlessly blend twenty-first lifestyles with timeless features, PATINA STYLE gives the feel that you are working one-on-one with the Giannettis.
Steve says, “The look of each home always starts with the client’s dreams of how they want to live. We try to draw that out of them and make something beautiful that supports their lifestyle.†Along these lines, they begin the book asking readers to think about their own lives and what’s important to them. The goal isn’t about perfection. In fact, Brooke says, “I don’t like things that are too perfect.†Instead, they want people to join their conversation about what makes life enjoyable and livable, and take those ideas home with them—literally.

Like the Giannetti’s other projects, PATINA STYLE has already made its mark. It sold out almost as soon as it was available for pre-ordering and the publisher went back to press for another printing before the first stock even hit shelves. The Giannetti’s style philosophy, that “life isn’t the things you own, but the experiences you have with them†is particularly resonant these days when people are looking for design that fits their lives and enables them to enjoy the people and things they love.
And of course, that philosophy fits well with Brentwood. After all, this is a couple that loves shopping the Brentwood Country Mart, raves about the coffee at Luxxe Café, and says Redi-Chick has the best French fries and barbecue sauce in town. If design is all about living, the Giannettis are doing both well.
