Service was restored Monday to 16 commercial water customers after utility crews repaired a 24-inch water main break in South Los Angeles.
Water service was restored at 12:05 a.m., according to a Tweet by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The roadway was expected to open to traffic at 6:30 a.m.
The water main break occurred about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of Manchester Avenue and Hoover Street, DWP spokeswoman Terry Schneider said. It sent torrents of water flooding down Manchester for a least a quarter-mile before workers could turn off the main valves.
It was not immediately known what caused the main to break, she said, and the 16 affected customers were on the north side of Manchester Avenue, between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street.
The utility’s Mike Avila told KCAL9 that the broken pipe was built in 1922.
