Diesel fuel that spilled out of an overturned big rig tanker shut down the northbound lanes of the Golden State (5) Freeway for several hours in Atwater Village Wednesday.
The crash and the spill, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 5 at Los Feliz Boulevard, prompted the closure, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The tank of the truck, which carried 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel, was punctured and leaked nearly all its content on the freeway, he said.
There were no injuries, no fires and no evacuation, Humphrey said, but crews did respond to the scene and all leaked fuel was contained.
The LAFD worked with the California Highway Patrol and the truck owner to coordinate a private vacuum truck to transfer the contents as well as a tow for the truck, Humphrey said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.
All northbound lanes were closed until about 5:10 a.m., when two of the lanes were reopened, the CHP reported. Two slow lanes remained blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.
