Malibu County officials have stated that they want a new restaurant to occupy the retail space where Gladstones has been for over 40 years.
Following Gladstones lease ending in October 2016, a new restaurant is to take its place. What restaurant that may be is still unknown. The state owns the title to the land at Pacific Coast Highway and Sunset Boulevard and currently allows for concession agreements of up to a maximum of 20 years.
The county Department of Beaches and Harbors has asked for the title to the land to be transferred, but the state of California declined, citing reorganization of the aforementioned department. Howeber, neither side wants to extend the contract, according to board documents.
Department of Beaches and Harbors officials recommended legislation that allows for a longer lease so as to benefit whatever restaurant takes Gladstones place, and properly make use of the very advantageous coastline location.
