Councilman Tom LaBonge called Friday for city officials to explore a possible bond measure to pay for new fire and police stations.
A motion introduced by LaBonge would ask city staffers to review the physical conditions and locations of fire and police stations around the city to determine if any are outdated or could be moved.
It also calls on staff to report on the feasibility of a bond measure to help fund the creation of new stations.
“There is a need to assess all fire stations and police stations in the city of Los Angeles to ensure that all facilities are at the most accessible locations,” LaBonge’s motion said. “Furthermore, many of these buildings (are) more than 50 years (old) and there is a need to provide better resources and locations for these outdated stations.”
The city has 106 fire stations to respond to emergencies and fires from Chatsworth to San Pedro, and 21 police stations covering a 498-square-mile area and about 4 million people, according to the motion.
