The 20-year-old son of actor Robert Downey Jr. is scheduled to be arraigned later this month on a felony charge of cocaine possession.
Indio Falconer Downey was arrested around 2:20 p.m. July 29 near La Cienega and Santa Monica boulevards in West Hollywood and spent about nine hours in jail before being released on $10,250 bail shortly after midnight the next day, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s officials said Downey was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle and was seen smoking from a pipe.
He was charged July 30 with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of possession of a smoking device, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 29 at the Airport Courthouse.
Robert Downey Jr., most recently known for his roles in Iron Man and The Avengers, had his own history of drug problems and troubles with the law. He served two stints behind bars before entering a drug-treatment program and emerged sober in 2002.
He issued a statement after his son’s arrest, saying, “Unfortunately, there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it”
“Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being,” Downey said. “We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s Department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
Indio Downey appeared with his father in the 2005 film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
