These are the ringing chants of the Veterans Revolution every Sunday at the Northeast corner of Wilshire and San Vicente Boulevards adjacent to Brentwood.
A spirited team of fellow Veterans in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s who call themselves the Old Veterans Guard, peacefully protest and refuse to fade away from this noble duty.
The Old Guard truly appreciates all the horn-honking, thumbs-up, high-fives, fist-pumping, V-for-Victory signs and hand salutes from passers-by who show their support.
March 9, 2011, was the Third Anniversary of the Veterans Revolution with 156 consecutive Sunday Rallies as proof of their unwavering loyalty to protect, preserve and defend the land at the Los Angeles National Veterans Home.
The sacred property these elderly Veterans are defending was deeded in 1888 “to be permanently maintained as a National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.†To the contrary, the VA has leased the land and buildings to non-Veteran entities, including, a dog park, an athletic playground for a private school, a public community park, public golf course, commercial parking lots, and many other misappropriated uses.
Meanwhile, 20,000 disabled and disadvantaged Veterans have been exiled and must fend for their own safety on the dangerous streets of Los Angeles — homeless and hungry — even though this is their legally deeded “Home.â€
The Old Veteran Guard is calling for the VA to execute the “Declaration of Enforcement†that will strictly enforce the Deed of 1888 and then implement the “Grand Plan†that will transform these hallowed grounds into a new “Grand Home and Gardens.â€
