A fittingly timed evacuation drill is scheduled for Mandeville Canyon in Brentwood this weekend, as several agencies will practice on Sunday, May 18, how to depart from a tight area in the event of an emergency.

The evacuation drill comes on the heels of a series of serious fires in San Diego County and numerous spot fires across the Los Angeles metropolitan region.

Below are details of the Sunday morning and afternoon evacuation drill, as provided by the Upper Mandeville Canyon Assoc. (UMCA):

Protecting your life and property in an emergency is not a game, but a lot of teamwork is involved. When wildfire threatens, the Los Angeles Police and Fire departments, along with many supporting agencies, work as one great team. Teams need practice.

On Sunday, May 18, at 10:00 a.m., there will be a Wildfire Evacuation Exercise in Mandeville Canyon and Brentwood hills. It is not mandatory, but we need lots of Residents participating to give our team the practice we need.

Exercise Description

Your phone will ring at 9:45 with instruction to leave home at 10:00.

Helicopters will appear overhead; LAPD will knock on a few doors in high density blocks and announce evacuation on loud speakers from the road.

Homeowners should secure their own homes before evacuating, but LAPD patrols will stay in area after residents evacuate to protect homes.

The entire canyon will be evacuated at the same time. Be ready, get set, and go. Traffic flowing from Mandeville will enter directly into Paul Revere Middle School, where a count of participating residents will be made and other information collected.

DOT and LAPD will make brief closures of Sunset to facilitate entry to Paul Revere. All incoming traffic into Mandeville will be stopped for ID checks.

Please stay for the Safety Fair after you evacuate. There’s much to learn.

Safety Fair at Paul Revere

Residents of Pacific Palisades and Brentwood are invited to attend the Emergency Fair at Paul Revere from 12:00 until 3:00 p.m. Many city/county agencies will have experts at the school including Red Cross, LAFD, LAPD, Animal Control/Rescue, My Safe LA (Earthquake preparedness), Emergency Management Dept., Parks & Recs, Metro, etc. who will answer any questions you may have. A fire helicopter, fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, a bulldozer, and a demonstration of brush fire fighting techniques will fascinate children and adults.

Food trucks will be on hand for refreshments.

Mayor Garcetti, Councilman Mike Bonin, Assembly Rep. Richard Bloom, and top Chiefs and Commanders of the LAFD and LAPD will preside.
