State Senator Ted Lieu meets with the Brownies from Kenter Canyon School at the last BCC meeting; photographed by Yolanda Pulakis
A special visit from the Brownies, our new state senator and a farewell to old friends at the June Brentwood Community Council meeting was an auspicious beginning to the summer season.

The Brownies of Troop #12755 from Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary School led the Pledge of Allegiance. They used funds from cookie sales last year to create a garden at the Karl Malden Station Post Office on Barrington.

Unfortunately, someone ripped out their garden. Undeterred, the girls were honored by our new state senator, Ted Lieu for the 28th District. Lieu was there with his field rep Irving Pacheco, to give each girl her Community Service Badge in recognition of their hard work and to introduce himself to the community.

Lieu has served since a 2011 to fill the seat of the deceased Senator Jenny Oropeza, but redistricting placed Brentwood inside his new boundaries. A letter of appreciation from Mila Malden Doerner, Karl Malden’s daughter, reinforced praise for the girl’s community service.

Festivities continued with a visit from our retiring City Councilman (D-11) Bill Rosendahl and Senior Field Deputy Joaquin Macias. Sporting tennies and a walker after his bout with bone cancer, the councilman was as ebullient as ever. He spoke frankly about marijuana as part of the treatment for his health challenges.

Chair Nancy Freedman unveiled a farewell gift – a bobble-headed doll in his likeness! It was an “LOL†moment. Our new councilman will be Rosendahl’s former Chief of Staff, Mike Bonin.

Then the Board got down to business, munching on Thin Mints from the Brownies.

An agenda item regarding a pair of resolutions on illegal signage on the Public Right-of-Ways did not require a BCC resolution, advised incoming City Attorney Mike Feuer. Chair Freedman reported that he told her a photo that clearly displays the signage and the phone and address of the business can be sent to tom.caballaro@lacity.org for enforcement.

Nancy Freedman announced the rollout of a new app for the City of Los Angeles, MyLA311, to report potholes and such, and to locate parks, libraries and other community resources.

And finally, California Pizza Kitchen will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on June 25 by donating 25% of their tally to Save the Coral Trees. Eat up, Brentwood!
