Citizen Journalists to the Rescue!

Recently we had a lot of inquiries to find out who the two “running twins†were. These guys, dressed alike, have often been seen jogging up and down San Vicente, hanging out in front of Whole Foods or Starbucks.

We tried to catch up with them but always kept missing them. I suggested in a recent Brentwood Beat that anyone out there who could grab these guys should view himself or herself as fully “deputized†to carry out an interview on behalf of the Brentwood News.

As it so happens, not long after, Tom Safran and his assistant, Aaron Smolinski, bumped into the twins at Starbucks, on the corner of San Vicente and Barrington. Not only did Tom and Aaron ask questions, they recorded a video of the whole exchange, using a cellphone.

Tom and Aaron sent us the link to YouTube and we were getting ready to post it on BrentwoodNewsOnline.com when I too bumped into the twins. They are nice guys, charming, innocent. But the next day they made it clear they felt they were not quite ready for prime time and asked that we NOT post the video. They said they would talk to us soon, but they just weren’t quite ready.

The video was quite good, really, I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want us to use it, but they assured me that Brentwood News would be the place they’d talk when they were ready. It sounded like that could be soon, so stay tuned.

But Tom and Aaron were quick on the draw and did exactly the right thing. The point of all this is that I really want ALL of you to send in news, photos, links to YouTube – any time at all.

If something is of interest to you, chances are good that it’s of interest to your fellow Brentwoodians as well. We love photos of kids, pets, grandparents. If you celebrate something, send us a photo and a caption. If you have an opinion about something, send me an email. Send anything you think might be of interest to jeffhall@brentwoodnewsonline.com.

Speaking of opinions, some neighbors of Archer School made it clear that they weren’t all that happy with Archer’s proposed plans to upgrade its facility. Some questioned why the Brentwood News told only “one side of the story.†We gave Archer an opportunity to explain its plans politely before opening this up to debate, and those in the neighborhood tell us they will be sending us something for next issue, not this issue. We look forward to receiving it – and running it.

Given the economic downturn of recent years – and the fate of print in general – we can’t always do journalism in the traditional way (lots of reporting, all sides represented, etc.). We are as much a “bulletin board†for your contributions as we are an outlet for original content. But we do seek to be fair, so if you see something in the Brentwood News with which you’d like to take issue, by all means, please do.

As you flip through the pages of this Brentwood News, note how much content is sent in by people just like you. We love it. We can’t be everywhere, and the Brentwood News is more of a community paper if members of the community contribute items of interest on a regular basis.

And if you like what we do, consider sending a contribution to: Brentwood News, 149 So. Barrington Ave., Suite 452, Los Angeles, CA 90049. We call this our “Brentwood Boosters†Club. Many of you do this and it really makes a difference. Special thanks to those who have contributed in the past – and to those who are about to!

Again, always feel free to send me an email: jeffhall@brentwoodnewsonline.com. You too can be a Citizen Journalist. Like Tom Safran and Aaron Smolinski, consider yourself fully empowered. We look forward to receiving your inputs. And we also look forward to telling you more about the “running twins.â€
