Architect Paul R. Williams and “Classic Hollywood Styleâ€

Over 300 guests attended the private garden party of Peter and Merle Mullin to celebrate the highly anticipated release of Rizzoli’s Paul R. Williams: Classic Hollywood Style, on Sunday June 10, 2012.

Written by Williams’ granddaughter, Karen E. Hudson, the book features a number of classic homes by the late architect, including the Mullins’ traditional Brentwood estate. This home is one of Williams’ largest estates in Southern California.

At the event, Gary Drake of Los Angeles-based Drake Construction showcased his firm’s historic renovation of the Mullin residence, which was a highlight of the event. Drake, who has built and remodeled custom homes for celebrity clients including Madonna, Sting, Rod Stewart and Jim Carrey, is a specialist in restoring classic homes.
His firm carefully remodeled this 1920’s home to create a fresh and contemporary living space for the Mullins, while preserving the finest assets of the architecture and its iconic historic details. According to Drake, “It was an honor and a privilege to work on this home, and to maintain the legacy of this Williams’ architectural treasure.†Drake Construction sponsored the entire affair.

The approximately 6,000 square foot home features a grand staircase, two-story solarium, library, gourmet outdoor kitchen and an impeccable car museum on the premises.

Special guests included architect Perry Hill and landscape designer Art Luna, who collaborated with Drake Construction on renovating the home; as well Harlan Lee of Lee Homes; Rick Caruso of Caruso Affiliated; interior designer Yvonne Colacion of Colacion Studio; Marion Lowry of Robb Report Magazine; Russ Diamond of Snyder Diamond; reporter/design VIP Eleanor Schapa; Linda Dishman, Executive Director of the LA Conservancy; and art consultant Merry Nichols.

Co-sponsored by Bret Parsons of Aaroe Architectural, the afternoon featured book signings by Hudson. Guests were also treated to special tours of the Mullin’s on-site car museum, which featured a number of treasured automobiles from The Mullin Automotive Museum. The Kitchen for Exploring Foods catered the event.
