At a new elegant venue in the center of downtown LA, The Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Steering Committee held the 2011 Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Dinner and Awards Gala. Approximatively 1000 HRC supporters showed at the event, including celebrities, politicians, media representatives, and volunteers. Selected celebrities and personalities walked the red carpet.
Joe Solmonese, HRC President came from Washington, D.C. and spoke at the event. He talked about the challenges, accomplishments and success stories during 2010. He also introduced Craig Stowell to all the members. Craig Stowell is known as a conservative Republican who spoke about the challenges facing the gay community and his support for his gay brother Calvin Stowell. Also, honoree Eric Alva spoke about the membership benefits of HRC and the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) Repeal Act signed by President Barack Obama on December 23, 2010.
The award recipients were Scarlett Johansson and Patrick Murphy who both received an Ally for Equality Award; and Rabbi Denise Eger and Rev. Canon Susan Russell who received the HRC Community Equality Award.
