A 2-year-old girl from Los Angeles was killed when she ran and fell in front of the back tire of a slowly-moving SUV at a swap meet in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said today.
The death was at 6700 W. Mount Whitney Ave. in Riverdale was reported to the CHP at 9:03 p.m. Saturday. The small farming town in is the San Joaquin Valley, 20 miles south of Fresno and 200 miles from Los Angeles.
The 2-year-old toddler was the child of a vendor at the swap meet, officers said. The Fresno County coroner did not immediately release her name, and the CHP identified her only as a Los Angeles County resident.
The CHP said the girl darted out, tripped and fell next to a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner that was moving at an estimated speed of 2 to 3 miles per hour. The left rear tire of the Toyota struck the toddler’s head.
The child was transported by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. She died while en route to the medical center.
The driver was not arrested, and the CHP crash report did not say if the driver was cited.
