Julian Wasser photographed Marcel Duchamp’s first north american retrospective in 1963. It was attended by a generation of up and coming artists including Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, and a boyish looking Andy Warhol. He captures the fun and frivolity of the opening, while also taking several images which were inspired by actual works on display and would later become iconic images. The image of Duchamp playing chess with a nude model was inspired by the artist’s Nude Decending a Staircase.
