The 1,000 free rain barrels offered by Los Angeles city two days ago proved so popular that all have already been claimed, but Mayor Eric Garcetti said yesterday that Angelenos can still apply for $100 rebates to cover most, if not all of the cost of purchasing rain barrels.
Santa Monica City still has them available for residents, they can be claimed here: rainreserve.com/santamonica
While Los Angeles City officials plan to offer another 400 barrels in January, Garcetti said Department of Water and Power customers can claim rebates on the rain barrels, which can be used for irrigating lawns and gardens.
Details about how to apply for the rebate is buried on the DWP website, but the persistent can find them by visiting http://www.lamayor.org/droughthack.
