Landing in Century City straight out of college, Young Nelson is Assistant Vice President, Underwriter at 1st Century Bank. He has a sports-debating podcast dream and fills his weekends with a healthy mix of TV series and challenging hiking trails.
Tell me a little about what you do in Century City?
I work in commercial lending to small/medium sized companies and individuals. My role specifically is to analyze the creditworthiness of our borrowers and analyze our risk as an institution.
Where did it all begin for you career-wise?
It all began here at 1st Century Bank. This happens to be my first job after college and I’ve managed to stick around for a good while.
What do you love about Century City? Where is your favorite place to eat/exercise/take a break from the office in the area?
I love the vibe and atmosphere of Century City. It’s full of young professionals in what looks like the picture perfect business district. It’s very self-contained and pretty much has everything you need within a few blocks radius. To be honest I never get more excited than when it’s time to take that bi-weekly walk to the mall for Chipotle. It’s a guilty pleasure of a couple of my coworkers and I, who make the trip about twice per week, which also doubles as an exercise routine, as we burn off some of the calories we gain on the walk back to the office.
If you could add one thing to the area what would it be and why?
Something to do at night; Century City is a really cool looking place at night and I think that goes under-appreciated because there’s not much activity after work hours along Century Park East. I think a nice bar or lounge in the heart of it would add something to the area.
What do you do in you spare time?
I’m a big entertainment buff. I spend a lot of time watching movies and binge watching TV shows. I’m at a point where I really study them analytically, and get into the psyche of what the creators and writers are trying to get across to us, beyond what’s just on the surface. That might take all of the fun out of it for a lot of people but gets me excited. To balance all of the TV time I’m really into finding new and challenging hiking trails in Southern California, so I don’t consider myself a total couch potato.
What is one cool thing that you want to do this year?
A friend and I have been trying to set up a sports podcast for some time now. Sports and sports debating, has always been a big passion of mine, and I feel like the world needs to hear what I’ve got to say! So that’s definitely something that I want to get started before the year is up.
Where was your last vacation?
My girlfriend and I spent a few weeks backpacking through Thailand this past summer. It was something that I had wanted to do since I finished school, and it took some time but I finally had the opportunity to go for it. We did some diving and went on a three-day trek through the jungle and slept in an open-air hut with our only shelter being a mosquito net.
Where do you wish your last vacation was?
Thailand was an amazing place. I wish I got to spend more time actually vacationing. We had a pretty ambitious itinerary for our 2.5-week trip and spent a fair amount of time on buses, planes and boats as we travelled through much of the country. I’d estimate we spent a total of six hours just lounging on the beach. It was a ton of fun and an amazing experience but we were exhausted when we returned home, just in time to get back to work.
