The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County decreased to 8.3 percent in April, compared with 8.7 percent in March and 10 percent in April 2013, the state Employment Development Department (EDD) reported on May 16.
California’s jobless rate was 7.8 percent in April, 8.1 percent in March and 9.1 percent in April 2013, according to the EDD. Nationwide, the
seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.3 percent last month, 6.7 percent in March and 7.5 percent in April 2013.
According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment increased in Los Angeles County by 8,900 jobs from March to April to reach 4,182,900.
The bulk of the increase was recorded in the leisure and hospitality industries, which added 5,500 jobs.
“The job gains were most evident in accommodation and food services…,” according to an EDD statement. “This increase marks the start of seasonal employment expansion as employers gear up for the summer season.”
About 413,000 people were unemployed in April in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of more than 4.97 million people.
