Is it unexpected that a rock star would compose an opera? Well, believe it! Brentwood resident, Stewart Copeland, was the founder and drummer for the rock band “The Police†(which featured Sting). Copeland will be having the American premier of his opera “The Tell-Tale Heart†at Long Beach Opera (LBO) in May. This definitely fits the motto of the LBO, “Expect the Unexpected.â€
Based on Edgar Allen Poe’s story of madness, Copeland’s opera had its world premier at the Royal Opera House in London. Because “The Tell-Tale Heart†is relatively short, “Van Gogh,†another work about genius and delusion, will be on the same bill. Composed by Michael Gordon, “Van Gogh†reveals the artist through the raw emotions of his letters.
This gripping double bill fusing rock, jazz, and classical modernism is a must-see. There will be four performances in May, scheduled at times making an easy ride from the Brentwood area.
On a personal note, at LBO’s annual gala to help raise funds, my wife surprised me by submitting the winning bid for a “Walk-On†role in “The Tell-Tale Heart. †(But, damn, they won’t let me sing!)
