Local veterans held a summer celebration and picnic on the VA grounds July 28. Several speeches were given, extolling those who wore the uniform — and thanking the original benefactors who granted the land to the U.S. in order to care for veterans disabled by the ravages of war. Carolina Winston Barrie, descendant of the Arcadia B. de Baker family, which gave the land to the U.S. government, was recognized.
