A man convicted of second-degree murder of a West L.A. woman in November was sentenced Feb. 4 to 15 years to life in prison, according to news reports.
The sentencing of Leonard Alex Dominguez, who was convicted almost three months ago, brings closure to a case that was left unsolved for 31 years.
Dominguez, 57, was reportedly convicted of strangling Sandra Phillips, a West L.A. resident, in April 1979.
When a deceased Phillips was discovered in her bedroom, investigators reportedly discovered semen on her body. Phillips was 33 years old at the time of the murder, according to news reports.
However, 28 years after the murder, law enforcement officials reportedly used DNA evidence to link Dominguez to the crime.
An arrest was made three years later.
During the November 2013 criminal trial at the Airport Courthouse, a jury found Dominguez not guilty of first-degree murder.
The Dominguez family reportedly is seeking to appeal the sentencing.
