March stormed in like a lion with a few rainy nights, but it’s back to clear skies and perfect weather for art hopping on the Westside this weekend. Saturday proves to be a busy evening for art parties. The Westside will be teeming with openings from Culver City to Santa Monica and Venice.

In Culver City this Saturday, March 7, New York artist Catherine Howe will be celebrated at Von Lintel Gallery at 2685 La Cienega Blvd. in a solo exhibit.

“Supreme Fiction” is Howe’s third solo show with the gallery. Merging classic mediums with unusual techniques, the artist’s untraditional use of basic materials creates multi-dimensional paintings. Also opening at the gallery is “On the Edge,” featuring another New York artist, Carolyn Marks Blackwood. The reception will take place from 6-8 pm. The exhibit will be on view through April 18 (vonlintel.com).

Meanwhile, FP Contemporary at 5835 Washington Blvd. in Culver City will feature the art of Lisa Bartleson in a solo exhibition titled “Where I Live.” A reception will be held from 6-8 pm Saturday, March 7. Can’t make the opening? It will remain on view through April 11 (fpcontemporary.com).

Additional openings in the neighborhood take place from 6-8 pm at Klowden Mann (6023 Washington Blvd., klowdenmann.com), Kopeikin Gallery (2766 South La Cienega Blvd., kopeikingallery.com), and Blum & Poe (2727 S. La Cienega Blvd., blumandpoe.com).

Bergamot Station in Santa Monica (2525 Michigan Ave.) offers several openings this weekend. Starting at 3 pm Saturday, March 7, enjoy an artist talk at TAG Gallery (D-3) with Christo Brock, Elizabeth Szymczak, and Kamil Vojnar. Their works will remain on view through March 21 (taggallery.net).

Astrid Preston’s solo exhibit premieres at Craig Krull Gallery (B-3) with a reception from 4-6 pm Saturday, March 7. The exhibit runs through April 11 (craigkrullgallery.com). Robert Berman Gallery presents “Faultline,” a solo exhibit debuting new works by Gary Palmer. A reception will be held from 5-8 pm Saturday, March 7. This exhibit runs through March 21 (robertbermangallery.com).

On the other side of Bergamot, a closing reception for “PAST PRESENT, The Art of the Silver Gelatin Print” will be held at Sulkin Secant Gallery (T-6). The event will include a presentation by art consultant Francie Kelley. The reception will take place from 6-8 pm Saturday, March 7 (sulkinsecantgallery.com).

In Venice, G2 Gallery at 1503 Abbot Kinney Blvd. presents “Snails to Whales,” an in-depth look at the underwater ecosystem spanning four decades, featuring photography by Chris Huss and Mark Strickland. An opening reception will take place from 6:30-9 pm Saturday, March 7. The exhibit will run through April 19 (theg2gallery.com). Also opening at G2 Gallery this weekend is “Nature OC: Ludo and Barbara Leideritz.”

Also on Abbot Kinney is Rivaworks Pop-Up Gallery, on view this weekend only (March 6-8). John Michael Riva Jr. has been a photographer most of his life. He graduated in 2012 with a degree in Fine Arts with a focus in photography. An avid sports fan, Riva Jr. has created an exhibition dubbed “Stoppage Time,” based on the frequently used sports term. In this fragment of time, any number of dramatic events can occur.

“I am focusing on the suspense that arrives with the dreaded overtime, or as we like to call it in the world of football (soccer) – stoppage time,” explained Riva.

This will be his first solo show, as well as his first sports related photo exhibit.

“I love sports in general and grew up playing many, including soccer,” Riva said. A reception will be held Friday/Saturday from 7-10 pm at 1306 Abbot Kinney, Venice (Mikeyriva.com).
