The corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards in Beverly Hills has long been defined by the Beverly Hilton. In the next three years, plans are in place to alter the famous intersection with one of Hilton’s holdings: Waldorf Astoria.
Plans for the proposed 12-story hotel-residence include 170 total rooms, including 128 guestrooms and 42 suites. The venue also calls for about 6,300 square feet of indoor meeting and special events space.
Once built, the new hotel-residence will also include a lobby bar, rooftop bar with VIP cabanas, upscale exclusive retail, and a 5,000-square-foot spa.
According to the Waldorf Astoria website, Pierre-Yves Rochon, Perkins-Will, and Gensler were tasked to design the new Beverly Hills hotel, which is on track to open in 2017.
“The architecture of Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is a thoughtful response to its urban context, a context established by the convergence of Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards and exudes the essence of its varied streetscape,” a description of the hotel read on the Waldorf Astoria website.
“The design itself is responsive to the overall architectural styles prominent in Southern California, and is a contemporary interpretation of Hollywood glamour drawing inspiration from the rich history of California’s Streamline Moderne style. With sweeping, silken white stone curves and majestic bronze ornamentation, the design pays homage to Los Angeles’ Golden Age,” the description continued.
Design plans also call for murals throughout the lobby and reception area depicting California’s landscape spaces.
According to news report, initial work on the project, which carries a price tag of about $200 million, is already underway. The City of Beverly Hills still has to approve the final design.
This project, once completed, would be the first Waldorf Astoria in the western United States. There are currently no Waldorf Astoria properties west of Chicago.
Waldorf Astoria is a Hilton flagship property. The Beverly Hilton, which is also at Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards, will remain standing and adjacent to the Waldorf Astoria.
News reports indicate there are plans for a second tower to be built at the same location.
