Sandra Fluke Decides Against Congress Run, Eyes State Senate

Sandra Fluke, an activist and attorney who gained popularity after being called a “slut” by talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, announced Feb. 4 on Twitter she will be running for the State Senate in this year’s election.

Fluke, 32, will be seeking to represent the 26th Congressional District.

With Fluke’s decision to run for State Senate, she will not be amongst the field of candidates seeking Henry Waxman’s seat in the 33rd Congressional District. Several news reports anticipated Fluke would throw her hat in the ring for Waxman’s soon-to-be open seat.

On her Twitter page, Fluke stated: “Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to #runsandrarun! I’ve announced my candidacy for #CA State Senate.”

Moments later, she tweeted Rep. Janice Hahn and State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson endorsed her bid for the State Senate.

According to news reports, Fluke filed paperwork requesting an endorsement from the California Democratic Party.

On her Tumblr page, Fluke states she is known for her “advocacy for gender equality and reproductive justice” and has also “devoted her career to public interest advocacy for numerous social justice concerns, such as LGBTQ rights, worker rights, economic justice, immigrant rights, and international human rights, including focusing on the impact to communities of color.”

Two years ago, Fluke was reportedly prohibited by Congressional Republicans to testify on the issue of women’s health. Fluke did, however, testify in front of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee “on the importance of women’s own private insurance covering contraception.”

WestsideToday.com will continue to track potential candidates for several seats potentially opening up in and around Los Angeles’s Westside region.
