What looked like all of Santa Monica arrived Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Civic Center parking lot to celebrate Santa Monica Police Department’s 32nd annual National Night Out (NNO) and to honor community partnerships. Families, friends, neighbors, and business associates enjoyed free events like safety information, entertainment, food, games, and raffles to learn more about public safety, leadership, and sustainability from 6 to 8 pm.
The Santa Monica High marching band was one of the highlights of the night, as were the”Adopt Me” dogs, Mounted Patrol horses, and various police and fire department vehicles.
Events and giveaways fell into three main categories: making a difference, exploring the neighborhood, and getting active. Adults and children were able to envision making a difference by visiting information booths about CERT registration, pet adoption, or the Community Academy. They got in touch with the neighborhood with information from NextDoor, learning how to start your own neighborhood watch, or getting safety tips from Santa Monica’s finest. Lastly, NNO-goers got active in their community at the giant obstacle course and rock wall, or by signing up with local sports groups.
As with most City of Santa Monica event, sustainable transportation was encouraged – People walked, rode bikes, or got a free round trip ride Big Blue Bus ride. Bike valet was also be available.
