After regaining the box office top spot last week, “Guardians Of The Galaxy” remains ahead of the pack, according to preliminary Rentrak estimates for the three-day Labor Day weekend.
Along the way, the Marvel-based action adventure became the highest-grossing film of 2014 with an estimated $16.3 million haul this weekend and nearly $279 million overall.
Another popular holdover, the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot took second place with an estimated $11.7 million. Rounding out the Top 5, according to Rentrak, is “If I Stay,” which remained in third place for the second week in a row with $9.2 million; newcomer “As Above, So Below,” which debuted in fourth place with $8.3 million and “Let’s Be Cops,” which dropped one spot to No. 5 with $8.2 million.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films this weekend, in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were “The November Man” starring former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, which debuted at No. 6 with $7.6 million; “When The Game Stands Tall” at No. 7 with $5.6 million; “The Giver” at No. 8 with 5.2 million; “Hundred Foot Journey” at No. 9 with $4.6 million; and “The Expendables 3” at No. 10 with $3.5 million.
