New TV Show “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” Explained at Television Critics Association Tour in Beverly Hills

West Covina is the setting for “Crazy Ex- Girlfriend,” a half-hour comedy pilot with musical elements to air on Showtime, the premium cable network announced today.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” stars Rachel Bloom — who co-wrote the script — as a successful, driven and possibly crazy young woman who gives up her partnership at a prestigious Manhattan law firm to find love and happiness in West Covina.

A “significant” portion of the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” pilot will be filmed in West Covina, including at the Big League Dreams Sports Park, Showtime Networks Inc. President David Nevins said during a presentation at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills.

Shooting on the pilot is set to begin in the fall, according to Nevins.

The West Covina setting is the result of Bloom and co-writer Aline Brosch McKenna’s “fascination” with the city’s “big box mini-mallishness,” plus “it seemed like an unlikely place that we would leave a big job in Manhattan to go to,” Nevins said.

A decision on whether a series will be ordered will probably come late this year or early in 2015. If it gets a green light, the show would debut in a yet-to-determined time in 2015, Nevins said.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a change of pace for us,” he said.

The pilot will be directed by Marc Webb, who directed “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “(500) Days of Summer.”

Bloom is a comedian, actress, writer and singer whose television writing credits include “Robot Chicken” on the Cartoon Network and short-lived Fox animated comedy “Allen Gregory.” She released two albums in 2013, “Please Love Me” and “Suck It, Christmas!!! (A Chanukah Album).”

Brosch McKenna wrote the screenplays for “The Devil Wears Prada,” “We Bought A Zoo” and the remake of “Annie,” set to be released Dec. 19.
