Brentwood Community Council member Nick Melvoin, who is also a candidate for Board District 4 of the Los Angeles Unified School District has raised over $124,000 since announcing his candidacy in February.
In contrast, eight-year incumbent and board President Steve Zimmer, has raised just over $7,000 in the same period.
Melvoin has a strong grassroots coalition, with 70 percent of his donors contributing $100 or less to the campaign.
“I’ve just begun to share my vision for improving public education in Los Angeles,” Melvoin said in an official statement. “[I] look forward to working on behalf of all the communities in the 4th District to turn those plans into real change.”
Melvoin is an adjunct professor of education at Loyola Marymount University where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Urban Education. Along with his seat on the Brentwood Community Council, he also serves on the boards of the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, the Union of Reform Judaism, and serves as a director of Camp Harmony, a nonprofit camp for homeless and underserved children.
Melvoin is a graduate of Harvard University and the New York University School of Law. He previously held positions with the ACLU, the White House Domestic Policy Council and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
