Beginning today and continuing through the end of the month, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles will host a Thanksgiving food drive at 25 of its branches, with the goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food for local families in need.

The LA Y will also waive its joining fee, a $25 savings, for members of the community  who donate five cans of food at an LA Y location throughout November.

“With branches that stretch across more than 100 miles of Los Angeles, we have a tremendous opportunity to positively impact our community,” said Alan Hostrup, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles.

“This service project allows us to work together as ‘One Y,’ uniting our employees, members, volunteers and neighbors in an effort to strengthen our community, one meal at a time,” he said.

The majority of donations will benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, while items received at LA Y San Fernando Valley sites will be included in North Valley Family YMCA’s Thanksgiving Food Basket program.

Since 2005, the North Valley Family Y has delivered more than 14,000 food baskets so children, families and seniors could enjoy a nutritious holiday meal.

Collections from the Santa Clarita Family YMCA will be donated to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry and Help the Children, while Grace Resource Center will be the beneficiary of donations made at Antelope Valley Family YMCA.
