Complete restoration of electricity was expected by midnight Thursday in the Marina del Rey area, where at one point today about 4,400 customers were in the dark.
As of 5:30 p.m., 560 customers were without electricity, SCE spokesman David Song said.
The outage began at 11:08 a.m. initially knocking out power to about 4,400 customers, according to Song.
By 1 p.m., power had been restored to about half of the customers, but 2,141 remained without electricity, he said.
The utility spokesman said the outage was caused by an equipment failure, but was unsure what type of utility equipment had stopped working.
Song said the outage was affecting customers south of Tahiti Way, between Via Marina and the Marina del Rey channel — an area dominated by large apartment complexes.
Some heavy traffic was reported on Lincoln Boulevard due to traffic signals that were not functioning about the time the outage began.
