Robert Downey Jr. will receive the MTV Movie Awards’ highest honor later this month when he is recognized for his wide-ranging film career.
“Throughout his career, Robert Downey Jr. has mesmerized audiences by capturing the humanity in larger-than-life characters like Charlie Chaplin, Sherlock Holmes and Tony Stark,” said Stephen Friedman, president of MTV. “He’s a brilliant actor and a Hollywood icon, and we are proud to recognize his tremendous passion and talent with this year’s Generation Award.”
Past recipients of the award include Mark Wahlberg, Johnny Depp, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
Downey will be presented with the award by his “Avengers” co-stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner.
The MTV Movie Awards will be held April 12 at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live. Comedian Amy Schumer will host.
MTV announced Tuesday that comedian Kevin Hart will receive the network’s Comedic Genius Award, which will be presented by Jimmy Kimmel. Actress Shailene Woodley will receive the Trailblazer Award.
