Santa Monica’s Adam Henry came third in the inaugural Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon while William Prom of Irvine came first and Alex de la Huerta of Mexico was the women’s winner.
Santa Monica also fielded the oldest runner; 77-year-old Sherry Steinberg.
Prom completed the 13.1-mile course in one hour, 14 minutes, 17 seconds for his second half-marathon victory. Fernando Blanco of Encintas was second in 1:15:46 and Adam Henry of Santa Monica third in 1:17:21.
“It was a fun run, but the wind really picked it up along the back half,” the 29-year-old Prom said. “That was pretty tough.”
Prom said he had no serious challengers “except the wind.”
The 24-year-old de la Huerta’s time was 1:22:42. Kellie Nickerson of Albuquerque, New Mexico was second among the women in 1:25:34 and Lauren Reasoner of Sahuarita, Arizona third in 1:26:03.
A capacity field of 12,100 entered the race and took 110 minutes to sell out, according to an official with runDisney, which holds a series of races at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
The race was the first “super hero” collaboration conducted by runDisney.
The course through the Disneyland Resort and surrounding areas was billed by runDisney as “the most extraordinary course on Earth.” It differed from runDisney’s two other Disneyland Resort races, the Tinker Bell Half Marathon and Disneyland Half Marathon.
The course began on Disneyland Drive, passed Downtown Disney and went through Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland.
Runners passed the Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove and The Outlets at Orange shopping center in Orange and ran through Angel Stadium. The course passed Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel and concluded near the Disneyland Hotel.
Avengers characters were along the course to support the runners.
The field was 62 percent female and included runners from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 12 foreign countries.
The youngest were 43 14-year-olds, 22 girls and 21 boys. There were 50 runners celebrating a birthday.
The next runDisney half-marathon at the Disneyland Resort will be the inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Jan. 18.
