The most popular day of the year for post-summer art receptions has always been the first Saturday after Labor Day. This year galleries have chosen to stagger their events – here it is, the third weekend after Labor Day, and the art parties continue.
In West Los Angeles, JAUS hosts a reception on Friday, Sept. 19.
“Despite the fact that we are right between Culver City and Santa Monica, we still try to avoid having our openings when there is way too much going on,” said JAUS gallery director Ichiro Irie.
Guest curator Carl Berg, director of Edward Cella Art + Architecture, has assembled a group exhibition titled “In Search of Turrell.”
Since the Hague dunes have always held a special meaning for Berg, a Dutch-American, he organized an art trip to the Netherlands and invited artists to participate in an exhibition in Rotterdam. These artists agreed to take a day trek along the Hague dunes, which led to James Turrell’s Celestial Vault.
“The show at JAUS will feature all new works based around this journey,” said Irie. “It will be mainly about all the artists who have had the pleasure to visit Holland through Carl’s support and encouragement.”
The reception will be held from 6:30-8:30 pm at JAUS, which is located at 11851 La Grange Ave., Los Angeles. For more information, visit jausart.com.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, Cherry and Martin gallery will host an opening for Jennifer Boysen’s solo exhibition, “Trans-mutes.”
Part painter, part sculptor, Boysen incorporates the use of copper, wood, and other found objects into her art. The reception will be held from 4-6 pm at the gallery, which is located at 2712 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles. For more information, visit cherryandmartin.com.
Close by, CHG Circa presents “Giants Among Us,” featuring the work of well-known contemporary artists. A reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 from 7-10 pm at CHG Circa, which is located at 8530A Washington Blvd., Culver City. For more information, visitcoreyhelfordgallery.com.
In Venice, the G2 Gallery hosts receptions for two new exhibitions, “Ricked from the Headlines: A Ranger Rick Photo Expedition” and “Nature LA: Susie Loucks.”
“Our exhibits have been increasingly ambitious and inclusive thanks to G2 Gallery director Jolene Hanson,” said PR coordinator Bennett Rea. “We’ve gathered artists from all over the world this year – Spain, Germany, Panama, etc. – it’s become more international, and still 100 percent of our proceeds go to environmental charities. We still keep our local flavor with series like Nature LA and artists like Jennifer MaHarry and J.J. L’Heureux who are based within a few miles (or feet) of the gallery.”
The reception will be held from 6:30-9 pm this Saturday, Sept. 20. The $10 admission supports environmental causes. G2 Gallery is located at 1503 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice. For more information, visit theg2gallery.com.
Additional receptions take place at bG Gallery (Bergamot Station #G8A, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, 90404) from 5-7 pm; Tara Gallery (1202 Montana Ave., Suite B, Santa Monica, 90403) from 6-8 pm; DESOTO GALLERY (1350 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, 90291) from 6-8 pm.
