The final Saturday of April coincides with an Earth Day celebration in Mar Vista.
Members of the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC) will be hosting the Sixth Annual Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The pedestrian-friendly event will be a celebration of Earth Day, which was officially on April 22, and, according to organizers, provide “provides useful information and inspiration for transforming your garden.”
Fewer gardens are featured in this year’s Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase, but guests of the event will be able to visit gardens featured in six clusters. Each cluster is bikeable and walkable, according to organizers.
“Each garden has one or more of the following sustainability features: California native/drought tolerant plantings, edibles or water catchment systems,” a blog post on the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase stated. “Visitors can talk with and meet landscapers as well as do-it-yourself gardeners who share knowledge and experience. Special guest presenters at many gardens will enhance your knowledge of sustainability in daily living.”
Coinciding with the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase is the Wildside School Garden Tour. Some local schools participate in both events. According to organizers, the Wildside School Garden Tour provides gardening tips and demonstrates how school gardens contribute to a sustainable environment.
“The Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase seeks to empower Angelenos to adopt environmentally conscious living solutions,” a blog on the event’s website stated. “With many people walking or biking their tours, there is a tremendous sense of community as garden enthusiasts from throughout Southern California join our neighbors to celebrate our shared vision for a greener life.”
