“White,” an enchanting production for the very young, opens later this month at the Lovelace Studio Theater at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.
The award-winning Catherine Wheels Theatre Company from Scotland will present performances February 26 to March 23.
In this offbeat comedy, the audience is invited into an all-white world where two friends, Cotton and Wrinkle, diligently look after a grove full of birdhouses, making sure that everything stays “bright, ordered and white.” But when colors start to appear, things become truly magical.
“White,” which had its premiere at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, won three Festival Awards including Total Theatre. It then triumphed at 2011 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS), winning Best Production for Children and Young People, Best Design (Set, Costumes and Lighting) and Best Technical Presentation. Picking up three of the ten awards available, it was described as the most successful show of the year. “White” was also nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award (2012) and an Australian Helpmann Award (2012).
“When we are establishing our programming for families,” said Edie Demas, The Wallis’ Director of Education, “we are looking – all over the world – for companies that will not only introduce children to theatre, but give them an experience that will prepare and excite them for a life that includes the performing arts. With Catherine Wheels we found exactly one of the productions we were looking for.”
