On Tuesday, January 15, the long-running Westside chamber music series, Chamber Music Palisades (CMP), will open the 2013 half of its 16th season with works by composers Maurice Ravel, Norman Dello Joio, George Gershwin, and jazz composer, Michael Publig.
“We are especially excited about this program because, while the works range from the very early 20th century to the present, they all have rhythmic and tonal innovation in common,†said Delores Stevens and Susan Greenberg, CMP Co-Artistic Directors.
The concert will begin at 8 pm in CMP’s familiar home, the Charles Moore-designed sanctuary at St. Matthew’s Parish, 1031 Bienveneda Avenue in Pacific Palisades.
Celebrated violinist Ida Levin will join pianist Stevens to perform Ravel’s radiant Sonata for Violin and Piano. Winner of the International Johannes Brahms Competition, cellist Alexander Suleiman, will join flutist Greenberg
and pianist Stevens in Dello Joio’s Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano.
Greenberg and Stevens will be joined by acclaimed bassoonist Judith Farmer to perform the World
Premiere of “time in_time out†, a new work by Michael Publig.
Finally, a medley of songs by George Gershwin will be sung by soprano Karen Benjamin, who starred in
the original Los Angeles production of Phantom of the Opera and with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a tribute to Stephen Sondheim.
