August – September is a great time to give next year’s garden a head start! Gardeners have the opportunity to cart away free compost at Santa Monica’s Quarterly Compost Giveaway on Saturday, August 27th from 7:00am onward while supplies last. The City of Santa Monica gives a a big “Thank You” to SM residents for their efforts in recycling their yard trimmings!
The compost available is made from yard trimmings collected curbside every week and is processed at a nearby composting facility. Compost is an effective way to improve soil health, increase plant production, and reduce the use of water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in your garden — and it’s free.
Santa Monica Residents should bring shovels, gloves, containers, and proof of residency, such as a utility bill. While quantities are limited per resident, there will literally be tons of material to go around.
Start the fall planting season right by preparing your soil; remove annuals, till and add plenty of compost. Your spring bulbs and/or winter garden are sure to thank you.
Interested in making your own compost? Try backyard or worm composting! Subsidized composting bins are available to residents year-round and will be available for purchase at the August 27, 2011 event.
Don’t let this opportunity slip by. Come out, pick up some compost, and start the growing season off with a green thumb!
