Kimberly Bailey’s life had not always been a piece of cake. Then she experienced a life changing epiphany at the intersection of Lincoln Blvd. and the 10 Freeway.
From that moment on she intuitively knew her life would be better, or smooth like butter, rather than bitter….indeed the idea for The Butter End became a life force.
A 40ish Kimberly, a creative and imaginative artist, came to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. But as the real world turned, her role became that of a breast cancer survivor.
Bailey’s Sinatra blue eyes glisten as she remarks, “I’m focused on the future, on having fun and laughter in life and using my time productively.â€
And with a gleeful smile she says, “Cancer gave me the gift of clarity, the chance to find my own bliss and plan my own destiny†.
Kimberly translates concepts into whimsical, dramatic, humorous and futuristic realities. Give her a “what†and she’ll find a “how†because she is blessed with creative and analytical mind. She is the cake maven, intense, yet sentimental.
At the inception of treatment Bailey graphically and honestly begans to convey her fears, concerns and desires in a raw blog that documents her journey to wellness. She confides that using her inner resources and experience in software sales in a competitive corporate America, enabled her to achieve positive resolutions.
When her insurance company denied claims for what they termed a “pre-existing†condition, she protested.
Eventually they over-turned the decision. The tide was changing.
“To keep my plight a secret would have empowered the cancer and separated me from the support and encouragement of friends and family,â€
she remarks as she ushers me into her sterling white kitchen.
Tingles and awe…..this dynamic persona has transformed a tattered loft and warehouse of sorts into the epitome of what she lovingly calls her “Cakery†. Here she’s found her niche producing completely original edible works of art with ingredients only the pickiest foodie would demand.
The flyer in her booth at a recent Brentwood Sunday Farmers’ Market elaborated. “We don’t use fondant because each cake is covered in premium rolled chocolate. “ Other ingredients include cage-free eggs, hormone free butter, organic milk and produce, Nielsen Massey flavorings and Guittard chocolate.
The sun glazes the white walls, skylights, and stainless appliances. Indeed, we’re in a “Candyland†or perhaps a space station nestled near 26th and Santa Monica.
I spot a Star Wars model of the Millennium Falcon that Kimberly and Rainbow, her baking sage, will replicate for the palette. Lights, smoke, lasers and other fine details satisfy the most discriminating eye for authenticity. Recipes can also be prepared vegan and gluten free.
Those with loving pets can order off the canine menu and be assured that their Fluffy, Max, or Duke will savor the taste.
Kimberly attended the Governor’s Conference on Women when Maria Shriver was First Lady. The custom cake she presented was thematically related to the event. Minerva is the Goddess of Wisdom and the perfectly baked insignia honored her emblematic courage, wisdom and strength.
How fitting that the venerable Lord of Success, the Remover of Obstacles, that elephant likeness—Ganesh was a cake topper for a client’s wedding.
Certainly Kimberly Bailey, self proclaimed Owner, Baker, Artist, and Dishwasher, has found her peace with cake.
