Gaza Battle Hits Close to Home
The strip on Wilshire blvd. in front of the Federal building has been a battleground lately, with several protests and counter-protests being held by StandWithUs (a pro-Israel group) and ANSWER LA (an anti-war and anti-racism group that supports Palestine). Pro-Palestinian demonstrators are angry over Israel’s invasion of Gaza and have chosen to protest in front of the Federal Building, where the Israeli Consulate is located.

A New Chair for UCLA

The Shapiros - UCLA Chair donors

The Shapiro Family Charitable Foundation has pledged $2 million to The UCLA Foundation to service mission of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

The first Shapiro Family Chair will be in Child Development Studies and Cerebral Palsy.This chair will support the teaching and research efforts dedicated to improving outcomes for children with developmental and behavioral problems.

The second million dollar gift will be for The Peter William Shapiro Chair for the Center for Cerebral Palsy. It will reside in the department of orthopedic surgery at the Geffen School of Medicine. This chair will provide the medical school with invaluable tools through which to promote and strengthen the clinical services offered to people with cerebral palsy and to educate the general public.

“The Shapiros’ generous gift to UCLA’s pediatric and orthopedic programs will help lead to exciting breakthroughs in child development and cerebral palsy,†said Dr. Gerald S. Levey, vice chancellor for UCLA Medical Sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “We applaud their commitment to support the work of our dedicated researchers and improve the lives of both pediatric and adult patients in need of lifesaving medical treatments.â€

The Skirball Cultural Center presents selected works from the Peachy and Mark Levy Family Judaica Collection now through February 8, 2009.

The Levys amassed their extensive collection of ceremonial Judaic during their world travels. The collection spans from 1959 through the present and highlights objects made in Israel as well as hundreds of Hanukkah lamps.
