The Shul in the Glen
The longer I live, the more I believe that the universe is a cosmic paradox. For example, Ahavat Torah is a Jewish synagogue that celebrates their faith in the Village Lutheran Church located at 343 Church Lane in the Brentwood Glen. But that is the first of many extraordinary things about this “Shul.â€
The heart of the synagogue is not in a virtual structure of concrete and steel. Instead, their bonds are of faith and community. The group meets at the church for Shabbat services every Saturday morning. Ahavat Torah’s membership is of a different demographic reflecting the fact that members are seeking a spiritual element that may have been missing in their lives. The congregation is composed of an eclectic mix of singles and couples from a variety of economic and social backgrounds. Participation is high: More than a third of the congregants attend services regularly.
Not only is the congregation diverse, but Rabbi Miriam Hamrell and cantorial soloist, Gary Levine, partner with the congregation in creating spirited, inviting, song-filled Shabbat and Holiday services, providing an inclusive space for religious, spiritual, and cultural enrichment. Members also regularly engage in Torah-based learning and social service activities.
On Saturday, September 6, Ahavat Torah will be holding an Open House at the church. At 9 a.m., there will be an exciting ethics class led by Rabbi Hamrell followed by services at 10 a.m. with a dairy potluck afterward.
High Holy Days services are being held this year at the synagogue across from Crossroads School located at 1751 21st Street in Santa Monica.
“If you are currently unaffiliated and would like to re-experience the kind of holidays you remember from your childhood, please join us for the High Holidays,†said past-president, Sid Rosenblatt. Baby-boomers looking to re-identify with their religion are warmly welcomed.
