Zev Yaroslavsky Announces He Will Not Run For Congress

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky on Friday ended speculation about whether or not he would run for congress.

Yaroslavsky issued a statement regarding his decision not to seek the 33rd District congressional seat of retiring Rep. Henry Waxman.

“I will not be a candidate for the congressional seat being vacated by Henry Waxman,” Yaroslavsky said. “Indeed, the last thing I thought I would be doing in February, 2014, was considering another run for office. But I was asked by several close political and personal friends to think about that proposition, and over the last week, I have done so.”

He said he decided against starting a new career in Congress at this stage of his life.

“I said in 2012 that four decades in elected office was long enough, and I meant it,” he said. “I am committed to public service and to advancing those public policies I have believed in all my life, but I intend to do so outside of elected office.”

The 33rd District includes Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Agoura Hills, Venice, Mar Vista, and the South Bay.

Waxman, who has served a total of 20-terms in Congress since 1974, announced Jan. 30 he would not seek reelection to the House this fall.
