A salon was recently held at the Audi showroom in Santa Monica (SM) for the many Long Beach Opera (LBO) benefactors living in the Brentwood, SM, and West LA areas. Andreas Mitisek, the Artistic and General Director, described the upcoming LBO season to a full house. Andreas entertained us by providing a brief preview of the 2013 season. While he played the piano, the beautiful diva, Susan Hanson, once again amazed us with her voice.
An exciting highlight of the evening was the presence of Brentwood resident, Stewart Copeland, the composer of The Tell-Tale Heart, one of the operas in LBO’s 2013 series. Featuring music at the edge of rock, jazz, and classical modernism, the LBO production will be its American debut.
Copeland was the founder and drummer of the famous rock band, the Police, performing with Sting and his other band mates. Of significance, Copeland is an accomplished and versatile composer of operas, ballets, and symphonies. His many film and television scores include soundtracks to Wall Street, Talk Radio, and Airbourne.
LBO is known for presenting operas that are at the edge, a refreshing change from the well-known operas that we have seen many times over the decades. Although Long Beach seems far from Brentwood, the ride on weekends is quite acceptable.
