Phil Varone, drummer for rock bands Saigon Kick and Skid Row, left the groupies and the tour buses in 2004 to turn his attention to his other love; comedy. He found a home at the world famous Hollywood Improv where he honed his stand-up skills. The tattooed rock star also hosted the wildly popular Sex Stand-up and Rock ‘n Roll Show.
Varone’s irreverent wit and unique, rock-star point of view were put to use in his web show, “The Master Debater†, on internet network The Stream and in his feature documentary WAKING UP DEAD. He also blogs for the website, The Comet, about current events, sharing his slightly conspiracy theorist thoughts on everything from traffic to TSA agents. His tongue in-cheek approach to relationships also made him a favorite guest on the syndicated radio show “Loveline†.
< br />Varone proved that he was more than just a funny guy, and began making appearances on top-rated television shows like “Californication†, “Identity†, and “Celebrity Ghost Stories†. After a stint on Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew on VH1, Varone was a guest on Oprah and The Tyra Banks Show. As comfortable in front on the camera as he is a packed stadium, his joy of acting has also led to numerous independent film roles.
Never one to be idle, Varone is currently working on a number of projects. He is parlaying his love of cooking into a new career venture. He is currently working on his rock ‘n roll-inspired cookbook, which will feature celebrity recipes and anecdotes. Always a musician, Varone confirms that there may be some truth to the rumors of a Saigon Kick reunion and a summer 2011 tour.
/>Rarely at a loss for words, Verone is also not afraid to bare it all. He is currently the latest rocker to appear as the cover model for Playgirl Magazine, and is one of few who have actually disrobed for the centerfold. Varone’s 16-page spread in Playgirl’s winter 2010 issue will be on newsstands until February.
