A Winter Day of Music at the Santa Monica Public Library

The Los Angeles Flute Orchestra, a professional ensemble composed of Los Angeles-based flutists, performs a one-hour concert at 12 p.m. featuring traditional holiday tunes arranged for flute orchestra as well as one-of-a-kind pieces specifically composed for the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra by local composers including Michael Kibbe, Peter Senchuk, and John Eidsvoog. The orchestra features the entire flute family — piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, F bass flute, contrabass, and double contrabass flute. Attendees will be able to get up close and personal with some of the largest flutes in the world.

The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, founded in 2005 by clarinetist/conductor Margaret Thornhill, features 16 accomplished clarinetists performing on soprano, sopranino, alto, bass, basset horn, and contrabass clarinets. The choir’s 3 p.m. concert features selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” (arranged by Kobayashi); “Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock (arranged by Parker); Jonathan Russell’s jazzy “Eleven” (Santa Monica premiere); Darius Milhaud’s Brazilian suite, “Scaramouche” (arranged by Morita); Francine Trester’s “Portraits” (a West Coast premiere); and Vaclav Nelhybel’s “Chorale and Danza.” Midway through the concert will be a show-and-tell of the various instruments.

Admission is free, all ages are welcome, and seating is first-come, first-served. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For special disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week prior to the event.
