Greenovation is an energy efficient lighting upgrade created by Lutron Electronics Co, Inc, a leading designer and manufacturer of lighting control products. In addition, its accompanying curriculum guide and software provide a unique tool in a teacher’s arsenal to teach students about light, energy and other, accompanying scientific concepts.
As a Greenovation school, Windward School has an energy-efficient Lutron Balance LC lighting control system that incorporates a web-enabled energy meter. This means that the lighting within the room can be controlled automatically to accommodate for changes in daylight and occupancy. Or the teacher can manually control the lighting to suit a specific task by means of a teacher wall station so that students are always learning by the optimal light whether due to teacher or computer control.
How does this control become a teaching tool? Through the accompanying meter which records real-time energy use in the classroom and communicates that data back to the classroom via proprietary software. This gives students a very real case study to see and analyze the relationship between reducing lighting levels and saving energy over the course of the day.
Lutron’s Greenovation system enables Windward School to save up to 60 percent of its energy usage for that classroom thus improving both their finances and students’ opportunities to learn.
